It feels like March happened yesterday but no, it’s September again and it’s time to get back to business! Usually, it is a time to enjoy nice temperature and festivals, sports events, etc – but this year is special – so here’s what to do in September in the United States.

Labor Day

Labor Day is a federal holiday in the United States celebrated on the first Monday in September to honor and recognize the American labor movement and the works and contributions of laborers to the development and achievements of the United States. It is the Monday of the long weekend known as Labor Day Weekend. Labor Day 2020 will occur on Monday, September 7
Many Americans take their last vacations of the summer over the three-day weekend, so expect hotels and inns near beaches to book up quickly. The holiday is akin to “May Day,” celebrated by many around the world as a salute to workers.
This weekend is a popular time for music festivals, block parties, and carnivals in all major cities throughout the U.S. including New York City, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. Due to COVID-19, many events have been cancelled, so we recommend you to check officials sources for the last updates.
US Open Tennis Championships

The US Open is one of the most important hard court tennis championships in the world. It takes place annually at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Tickets are made available almost a year in advance, but don’t worry if you forgot to buy your tickets: this year spectators are kept away from the stadium because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The event typically draws tourists and helps boost the city’s economy, something that will also be different this year. Still, you can follow the championship on television: last year’s U.S. Open averaged 1.28 million viewers across ESPN and ESPN2, its highest average since the network began carrying the event exclusively in 2015.
2020 Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby is a horse race held annually in Louisville, Kentucky, United States, on the first Saturday of May since 1875. It’s normal for the Kentucky Derby to be the talk of the town, but this 2020 running of the historic race will be talked about for years to come because for the second time since 1945, the Kentucky Derby will be run on the first Saturday of September!
We don’t want to be a boomer but due to COVID-19, none of the pomp-and-circumstance that typically comes with the fastest two minutes in sports — from the 70+ event Kentucky Derby Festival to the star-studded celebrity parties, to the fabulous fashion, overflowing mint juleps and 150,000-plus crowds at Churchill Downs — will be found in Louisville this year. Yet you can still take your bet online and follow the event on television.
Oktoberfest in New York City
Every weekend in September
The Oktoberfest is the world’s largest Volksfest. Held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, it is a 16- to 18-day folk festival running from mid- or late September to the first Sunday in October, with more than six million people from around the world attending the event every year. Of course, New York City has its own version and the festival is still maintained in the city!
There are lots of reasons to love Oktoberfest… the lederhosen, the beer, the pretzels, the stein holding contests… If you’re not traveling to Munich this year, experience Oktoberfest in New York! Over 6 weekends, you can experience everything that makes Oktoberfest great – authentic German beer, brats and giant pretzels, Oktoberfest decorations and fun games for the entire family. College Football Games
Whole season
September means kick-off time for college football. Grab your buds and head to America’s top college football destinations, such as “The Big House” Michigan Stadium (the largest football stadium in the U.S.) in Ann Arbor. Or check out Bryant–Denny Stadium at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, the home of the Crimson Tide, the 2018 National College Football Champions.
Burning Man (Black Rock Desert, Nevada)
August 30 to September 6, 2020,
Each year, an ancient lakebed of the Black Rock Desert in Nevada (called the Playa) becomes the most populous town in the entire country for several days. There’s art, music, dance, community, and partying. But it’s 2020, so Burning Man will take place in the Multiverse! A virtual world for people to explore.
During a time when many are unable to gather in person, something truly wondrous has emerged — dozens of imaginative Universe creators built an ever-expanding virtual Burning Man Multiverse comprising eight Universes, a virtual Temple, and a globally distributed Man Burn.
