New York Bar Exam and Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Many states have cancelled or postponed the July Bar Exam, including New York, which has now a scheduled Bar Exam for September 9-10. New York Bar Exam Coronavirus

More than 1,500 members of the legal community – including recent law school graduates – signed on to a letter sent Monday to New York’s top appeals court, urging it to reconsider its decision to offer an in-person September bar exam and to hold a public hearing on the matter, amid an uptick in coronavirus cases in the United States. The letter argues that New York should give an emergency diploma privilege to recent graduates.

Don’t Freak Out Just Yet

There is much speculation and little certainty regarding how the coronavirus (COVID-19) could cause chaos when it comes to the bar exam. As of today, the New York Bar Exam is still scheduled on September 9-10 and the Board of Law Examiners has rejected any plan for an online test or diploma privilege.

There is no major profession that uses an at-home remote or online licensure exam," said the spokesperson by email. "Because of the high-stakes nature of professional licensing exams, in-person, proctored exams are the most fair and secure way to license recent graduates."

Carry on and Prepare for The Bar Exam

Bar exam preparation companies have been scrambling to set up new courses and adjust their delivery models due to the Covid-19 crisis and resulting changes in how the test is given.

Mike Sims, president of BARBRI, a Dallas-based company with more than 200 employees, said its teams that handle IT, course content and teaching, and operations, each “moved heaven and earth to keep things going” over the last three months.

At this point, every students should prepare for the Exam as usual. More, students have a longer timeframe to prepare for the Bar Exam and should seize this occasion to be well prepared.
