LL.M in New York City: A Great Place to Study

LL.M in New York City: A Great Place to Study

With some of the top law schools in the country and most of the influential law firm in the world, New York City is definitely attractive.

In an interconnected world one might think that the physical location of your law school don’t matter anymore. But it does.

New York City is at the heart of the world: Wall Street, United Nations, Amnesty International, many organizations are located in the Big Apple and influence over global law, business, culture and politics. The City has more law schools and lawyers per square mile than any other city in America, making it a great choice for doing an LL.M.

Most importantly, the New York State Bar is viewed to most foreign-educated lawyers as THE Bar to have. Being admitted in Texas simply does not carry the same weight as being admitted to practice in New York.

So what makes New York City a great city for an LL.M? Here’s some answers.

1. Opportunities

If you can make it in NYC, you can make it anywhere. This idiom sums it all.  Especially for students, there are always things to do. Whether you are looking for an educational opportunity such as a lecture, a work opportunity such as an internship, or entertainment such as musicals, poetry readings, or art shows. There are always such things taking place somewhere in the city.

2. Networking

Networking plays an important role in your legal career. So with some of the best law schools and every major global law firm headquartered there, not to mention global banks, accounting, consulting firms, startups and other big technology firms, New York is a great stage for networking.

The city bar associations and other organizations organize numerous events thorough the year, truly displaying the depth and breadth of the legal industry, on a national and international level. As a student, the connections we make through our schools, our educators, and opportunities the city has to offer are incredibly valuable and could set us up for very successful careers.

3. Culture

There are few places like the city, in terms of multiculturalism. Experts say that as many as 800 languages are spoken throughout its five boroughs and all its unique neighborhoods, where students can find a home away from home.  With this myriad of different people, comes an influx of different foods, cultural events, traditions, and ideas. It also makes it possible for people to connect to their origins, despite being away from them

What about the cost of living?

Everybody will tell you about the cost of living. But, you can make it in NYC on a student budget; you’ll just need to be savvy about your money. And, the most important place to start is with your budget.

Like with any investment, make sure you can do it beforehand. The last thing you want to worry about during your LL.M program is about money.
