Today, nearly 2,600 sailors, coast guardsmen, and marines have arrived in New York with the beginning of the Fleet Week.
So what is Fleet Week?
Fleet Week is a the U.S. Navy,Marines Corps and Coast Guard tradition in which active military ships recently deployed in overseas dock in a variety of cities for one week. Once the ships dock, the crews can enter the city and visit its tourist attractions.
4Â US Navy ships, 3 US Coast Guard cutters, 4 US Naval Academy Yard Patrol boats and a pair of Royal Canadian Navy vessels will be accessible to the public.
There are other events throughout the week such as the Navy Band concert at the South Street Seaport, Washington Square Park, and Union Square. And don’t miss the Military Island pedestrian plaza in Times Square!
